A Handbook of Problems

Design of 'A Handbook of Problems. The book documented the project work of groups of students at the Institute of Industrial Design, Interactive Media and the Institute of Visual Communication at the Design School Kolding over the period of eight months.

The project, titled 'Design to improve life' combined the different qualities of Industrial Design, Interactive Media Design and Visual Communication. Parallel programmes took place at seven different design schools across the world.

The students were engaged with the issue of how design can improve life. Their focus was on dealing with local and global problems and attempting to make a positive response to the zeitgeist of our times. The end results documented a surprisingly wide range of problems that are a challenge to both industry and society as a whole. For Design School Kolding it represented a continuation of work with inter-disciplinary and intercultural design issues.

Initially these results were to have been documented online via the project initiator INDEX2005. However due to technical limitations this did not transpire and the work of 200 students was in jeopardy of never being shown. As a salvage measure Rasmus Koch Studio insisted for an expression that would save the students work. A handbook of problems was born out of this necessity.
