Design of 2 stamps, issued to mark the 350th anniversary of the Supreme Court of Denmark
The Supreme Court was founded by King Frederik III in 1661. Shortly after Frederik III had proclaimed himself absolute monarch of Denmark, he issued a decree on the "Administration of the Supreme Court in Denmark" on 14 February 1661. This founding of the Supreme Court was an element in a new form of Danish governance.
With thorough research we found an example of this decree in Copenhagen's Royal Library Archive, and this document can now be seen on the first of the stamps.
Today the task of the Supreme Court is to make decisions in test cases, and thereby ensure uniformity in the application of the law by all courts in the country. The motif on the second stamp shows the existing main courtroom.
To celebrate the first day issue of these stamps, a folder containing them was produced. Graphic detailing on the folder also originates from the Supreme Court´s earliest protocols, found in the Royal Library's Archive. Format: 20 x 46 mm
